31st December 1978, New Year’s Eve, one of the most snowy winters in years has just began and the weather has paralyzed most of the Poland. Passengers of one of the long distance trains, who were hoping to reach their destinations before midnight, are informed by the train crew that they are stuck right here and there is no chance they gonna move any time soon. As they soon realize they are not the only one - there is nearby station, Koluszki Junction, one of the main junctions in Polish railway network, where several other trains are stuck. Young man, Andrzej Roszak, who was on his way to emigrate from Poland and meet his girlfriend in Paris decides to walk towards the station through the heavy snow. When he reaches Koluszki there is already group of people waiting in the train station building and the newscaster in TV informs the nation about the heavy weather. It is obvious none of the passengers will reach his destination, but to stop worrying they try to kill the time and have their New Year’s ball right here in the middle of the snow storm. Among the passengers are people from different paths in life: party official, famous actor, journalist, ambassador and his beautiful wife, young rebel - that night will change their lives.
Polish film with plot built around real event, which was sudden snow storm that paralysed whole Poland in last days of 1978 (still called the Winter of the Century). Filip Bajon used this event as background for his movie and placed different people in same place, where during one night they have to spend together their views on life, their past and the future will clash. The film was created as political and philosophical look on Polish society at the dusk of communism in Poland. Unfortunately it is completely incomprehensible for foreigners, but also for many Polish people. As for trains theme there are scene shot inside the trains and plenty of shots inside the train station cut off by heavy snow.
