Belgian detective Hercule Poirot on his way back from the Middle East arrives to the Istanbul, where he stumbles upon his friend, Signor Bianchi, who is a director of Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits that operates the Orient Express. Bianchi insists that Poirot should be his guest aboard the famous train, but when they arrive to the train station it turns out that the train is already full. There is one berth free, but it was promised to one of the passengers, Hector McQueen, that he will have the compartment for himself. Bianchi sees no other option than ordering conductor to assign the only available berth to Poirot. Among the passengers of the Orient Express are aristocrats, retired army officers, as well as wealthy American businessman, Samuel Ratchett, who’s secretary is Hector McQueen. After the breakfast Ratchett approaches Poirot with unusual request - he offers substantial amount of money to the detective for protecting him during that travel. Poirot tries to figure out what is behind that request, but Ratchett is evasive - the only thing revealed is that he has been receiving anonymous letters in which someone was threatening to kill him. Poirot refuses to take the offer, but during the night he is disturbed by the noises from the next compartment that is occupied by Ratchett. In the morning, while the train was forced to stop in the middle of nowhere due to snowdrift, Beddoes, Ratchett’s butler, finds him dead in the berth. Bianchi asks Poirot to investigate the case before the train will reach the next station, hoping to save the company from negative attention of the media. Detective agrees, especially since the case seems to be complicated - Ratchett was stabbed in the chest several times, but it seems that first someone has poisoned him.
Classic Agatha Christie novel adapted into feature film about the murder on one of the most famous trains in the world. The story, as well as many stars that took part in this adaptation, made this movie a classic - eccentric detective, train stuck in the middle of nowhere and the murderer, who had no chance to escape and still could be among the passengers. Great atmosphere, classic mystery story and the Orient Express with its unusual fame and passengers.
