At first glance Train Valley seems like a very simple game, the graphics could appeal to kids more than adults, but if you dig a bit deeper it could be quite challenging. So what is it all about? Well, the title says it all - Train Valley - it is about trains. In five stages, you build a network of tracks between cities in order to transport goods between them. The stages are Europe, America, Japan, Soviet Union and Germany, the timeline of the particular levels is set between 1830 and 2020. Each country depicts a different side of the railway evolution - from simple steam locomotives to bullet trains in Japan.
Each city on the map has an assigned colour, each of the trains that will show up also has an assigned colour, it is not hard to guess that you have to deliver whatever the train is carrying to the city with the same colour. Each of the levels has additional challenges, f.e. earn some amount of money, deliver some amount of extra trains or destroy environment elements worth some amount of money.
Also, some of the levels have additional impediments appropriate to the era the game takes place, f.e. during World War I in Germany your tracks can be bombed, during the Winter Olympics in Japan you have to deal with passenger trains carrying the tourists, in Soviet Union you need to deal with extra train carrying parts of the space rocket. But even without the extra challenges and special events, the game could be quite challenging with budget limitations and the hassle of coordinating trains around the map.
Train Valley does not look like much, the interface is a bit childish, but the gameplay could be at the same time relaxing and challenging. There is also a sandbox mode, but without budget pressure, the game loses a bit of its appeal. The only snag with the project is that some of the levels are frustrating just for the sake of being frustrating, and f.e. random trains are sent down your network and will ruin your overall plan.
