Another ordinary day in New York subway system is suddenly interrupted when train Pelham 123 makes a unplanned stop in one of the tunnels. Dispatcher Walter Garber can’t find any explanation, so he tries to contact the motorman of Pelham 123, but someone else answers the radio, someone who calls himself Ryder. It seems that the train have been hijacked by armed people, who already shot dead a police officer, who tried to stop them. Ryder and his accomplice have chosen a best spot in the subway system to attack - in the place where they can’t be easily reached and where they can see any approaching policemen. They demand ten million dollars and give authorities only one hour to deliver it to the tunnel. Dispatchers contact the police and soon negotiator arrives to take over the contacts with Ryder, but hijackers kill one of the hostages just to show that Garber is the only person they chose to contact. Mayor of New York arrives to the scene, but things only get worse.
Another remake of 1974 classic thriller Taking of Pelham One Two Three, this time starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, but unfortunately the creators decide to fiddle with the story itself, which did not worked well. While the original film had style, atmosphere, great cast and was kept down-to-earth, the 2009 version has lost most of those qualities. The cast did well, but more brutal approach to the hijacking and not very impressive narration made it a rather disappointing production - the was no chemistry, the story wasn’t very involving, the whole thing was really detached from reality.
